And yes, it does, if you mean being put in a cage. Doesn't matter how angry you are, being forced into a position where all you can do is read, talk with cellmates or think is definitely going to calm you down. The first day you'll be thinking of killing the guy who snitched (maybe you would if you got 20 lashes and were back on the street the next day), then just be angry, then eventually get rational about what you really want to do about your situation.

Apparently (not mentioned in my wikipedia quote), he went in anti-western, wanting Islam to resist the US's influence. Came out wanting to destroy the US, ready to assassinate, and also with the radical notions that many muslims were already corrupted and could be killed and that to wake up the masses you had to inflict terror.

Wasn't allowed books or anything on his time inside, nothing that could alter his perceptions going in and coming out other than the torture he faced daily and the time he got alone to think about it.

Also, in a roundabout way, the US planted the seed that ended up biting it in the ass on 9/11. The torture tactics used in Egypt were taught to the prison guards by the US (much like in south america). Likely if that didn't happen, Qutb wouldn't have become radicalized, wouldn't have become a martyr, Ayman Al-Zawahiri wouldn't have started his own muslim vanguard to whom he recruited bin Laden and started a terrorist network, and 9/11 wouldn't have happened.

It's odd how this shit comes around to bite you in the ass later on. If you're asking me if every person in the prison system deserves to be there, no. But some do, some need to be in cages away from society. But not tortured. Torture is either going to break a prisoners mind in two ways: Fuck them up enough that they can't function when brought back to society, or break them to the point where they're radicalized.

I agree, some come out very matured and educated. Most don't. Prison isn't just some sit around of just chilling in your cell. It's a dangerous place. You are always on edge. Some jails are packed purely with just violent offenders, how are these people suppose to be able to calm down to think when they go in with a life and death attitude, and they are forced to deepen that attitude just to survive.
