chemistry help
i've watched all the youtube videos, read the textbook, all that shit but i don't understand this. can somebody help me out?

How to find electron configuration for atoms?

perhaps one of you can frame it in an easier manner. and i can ask questions later as well.

RE: chemistry help
If you are talking about the Bohr's model configuration, then this should give you a good example. Basically you have to make the atom a nuetral environment by balancing out the protons and the electrons. The example is one of Phosphorus which has 15 protons. You must add 15 electrons to make itr nuetral. on the first enrgy level you can have a max of two e-, the second energy level you can have a max of 8 e-, and the third level you can have a max of 16 e-. That should help you ith most of the basic chemistry stuff.

RE: chemistry help
yeah but i'm talking like boron's electron configuration is 1s^2 2s^2 2p^1. electron, noble gas, orbital configuration notation. i can google the answers right now but if i don't understand how it works on a test i'll be screwed.

RE: chemistry help
Look at the periodic table and see how many electrons the element has.

The electron configuration goes 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 4s2, 3d10, 4p6, 4d10, 4f14.
The orbitals fill up in this way. One orbital must completely fill before going onto next.
Then take the number of electrons the element and "put it into" the pattern above.
For example, if you had Oxygen which has 8 electrons, it would be 1s2, 2s2, 2p4
Note the numbers in each orbital. They all add up to 8 because Oxygen has 8 electrons.

Hope that can help, I'm not very good explaining :/ I'm actually doing chemistry work now, so fuckin hard I can't do it Smiley-sad

RE: chemistry help
Just remember this:
1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 4s2, 3d10, 4p6, 4d10, 4f14
and you're pretty much set man. Remember sub shells go in this order and that the orbitals don't start to fill the next one before that one is full.

Remember the 4s orbital is filled before the 3d.

BTW do you have to actually draw the orbitals out in boxes with arrows in them for the test?
If you need help for that just shout. All I can say is practice too.

RE: chemistry help
Orbital configurations are confusing toward the middle if you don't know what you're doing. Good luck with Chem homie, i've already owned it.

its impossible to conceptualize something i cannot visualize. this blows.
yeah i need the arrows to which i haven't figured out.

you guys are really good, would've been fucked without this Smiley
