RE: What are YOUR thoughts on abortion?
Yea I saw that they claimed to have started the treatment though it is unconfirmed if that's true.

So basically they'll rather risk her having a deformed fetus from the chemotherapy than let her have an abortion, do the treatment afterwards, and then have a healthy child later? Wow...
Also this:

Quote:Fondeur tells me rounds of chemotherapy will severely affect, and possibly kill the foetus, which would be regarded as a crime under the country’s stringent abortion laws.

Why would they let her go through the treatment with the baby still in her if it is possible that it will die from it which is just as punishable as actually having an abortion?

So they're saying her only option to avoid breaking the law is to have the baby and hold off treatment?

Anyways, I noticed they said she had acute leukemia which I just looked up and it does require immediate treatment.
Quote:Acute leukemia is characterized by a rapid increase in the number of immature blood cells. Crowding due to such cells makes the bone marrow unable to produce healthy blood cells. Immediate treatment is required in acute leukemia due to the rapid progression and accumulation of the malignant cells, which then spill over into the bloodstream and spread to other organs of the body. Acute forms of leukemia are the most common forms of leukemia in children

And I am curious of how healthy it is for this child to grow in her while she has cancer.

RE: What are YOUR thoughts on abortion?
No, no, it's not like the doctors are against abortion in this case (which is a highly likely consequence of the chemo or whatever), they're afraid of getting prosecuted because abortion is illegal there now - life is "sacred" from "conception" till death or whatever they added to their constitution. So they've been the ones trying to ramp up public pressure on the government to grant an exception in this case. Either they've gone ahead and started treatment, risking prosecution, the government gave permission and we just don't know or they're just talkin shit cause they've no doubt come under fire from people saying they should do it anyways.

I couldn't find much other than the Reuters article, nothing more recent (everything I found references either the Reuters article or the CNN one). It's a couple weeks old so this shit could be settled already. Haven't even seen it reported, found out through a petition. Personally, I think it's a great thing to bring up in these types of examples as a real life situation to get people engaged and thinking. Don't know why it shouldn't be all over the news. Oh, right, forgot, the Olympics are much more important...

I didn't mean anything against the doctors or hospitals. I was talking about the pricks who won't allow it.

RE: What are YOUR thoughts on abortion?
^The government? Yeah, I don't know if they actually said anything specific about it. It just looks like they recently added an amendment to the constitution about life being sacred from conception and that's understood to mean that abortion is unconstitutional. Funny though, can't remember which article but I think they quoted someone who drafted the amendment and dude was like "that's not what it was meant for, to leave the mother in danger".

It's fucked cause something similar happened in Nicaragua, where one of the leaders of the Sandinistas (marxist-leninist party that got elected in the 80s there, and was obviously very progressive on things like abortion), needed to gain the Church's backing to get back in power (2006?), and so he's the president now, and has made abortion illegal. It's fucked up shit, but it's a testament to the fact that politicians are bought and paid for, in one way or another, that's the nature of republics/parliaments, what they call "representative democracy", lol.

Either birth control needs to be 100% accessible or abortion does

Fucking unbelievable. She died because some asshole cunt mother fuckers think their personal choice, to not get an abortion no matter what, should apply to everyone else by law.

It's the woman's choice.
It should be legal.

RE: What are YOUR thoughts on abortion?
What really gets me here is the behavior of the doctors and hospital staff. It doesn't seem like that other case, with the Dominican girl where the medical staff were afraid of prosecution. Apparently, they could've recommended she leave the country for treatment or invoked emergency protocols or something. Fucked up shit.

You begin saving the world by saving one man at a time; all else is grandiose romanticism or politics.
