It makes zero sense other than to appeal to the audience to call him robin. If this guy was always going to take up the cowl of batman (is that even in the comic?) why even bring up robin. Why not make robin a separate character altogether.

I was thinking the same thing after I initially saw TDKR but idk how it would work. Robin is more of a sidekick, at least that's how I've always seen it, and it might be odd for Batman not to be there. Now I am not saying they can't pull it off, they probably can, and I agree it would be interesting to see how it would end up.

I don't think it is a coincidence. I think it is to clarify that his character is indeed suppose to be Robin. But he will not go around as Robin for the reasons Sean has already stated:

There's a storyarc called Battle for the Cowl. A seperate Robin character would be pointless without Batman, as would Nightwing since Nightwing was Grayson going from Robin to Nightwing. It's likely that Blake wouldn't become Batman until he was needed. At the end of TDKR there was a whole thing about hope and during the dark times Batman represented that hope. But now he's given the people of Gotham that hope because is whole purpose was to inspire the idea that anyone can be a hero. So I'd say that Blake won't become Batman until needed. It'd probably be similar to Batman Beyond.
