RE: Oppression of Women ...in Islam?
I have a close Muslim friend who told me all about how Islam empowers women, and how the degradation of women is a bunch of bs by a 'few' Muslims who do not represent Islam in it's purest form. Thanks for sharing MS.

Damn i cant see the vids. I will have to check them out when i have my laptop.

Im sure Islam does not degrade women but that dont mean degrading does not happen. It happens everywhere around the world and its sad to see.

Ja, Islam and followers of Islam are two different things. I don't recall Christ saying anything about covering for paedos but it still happens.

You begin saving the world by saving one man at a time; all else is grandiose romanticism or politics.

True that. One cannot judge a following (Islam in this case) by it's followers, but, only by it's ideals (the qur'an in this case).

RE: Oppression of Women ...in Islam?
What, like those two videos are the burden of proof that no Muslim ever degraded a woman and all Westerners do? Come on. Women are the most vulnerable section of society in all parts of the world and suffer in every single country, city and block of the whole planet.

I understand wanting to fight the orientalist trope that has been placed on Islam of mistreating women, for this is a false perception and a generalization (which are always dangerous). Trying to turn the black to white and white to black, however, doesn't do anything. You need to point people towards the grey areas, show them this situation is not absolutist but rather completely subjective and present everywhere. That's a way more compelling case.

This thread was NOT about Muslims degrading women as you said, it was about Islamic prinicples. Hamish and syth both outlined this correctly:

You may have misunderstood but I had NO intention to point the finger towards Western culture degrading women and say that 'Islam is better than Western in treatment of women'. My point was to simply show an Islamic perspective expressed in a song.

A word in general to everyone, the actions of Muslims don't entirely represent is Islam, Islam represents itself.

I am not saying that YOU or EVERYONE says that Islam degrades women, I am just addressing a point that SOME have this false notion. Just as not EVERYONE thinks 'Islam is of the Devil' and it's just a mere few that do. Please don't misunderstand this point.

Peace.

Riveting Tale, Chap.

"The government is in the wrong, and this is the chief cause of the persevering opposition of the Indians, who have nobly defended their country against our attempt to enforce a fraudulent treaty. The natives used every means to avoid a war, but were forced into it by the tyranny of our government." - Major Ethan Allen Hitchcock on the Second Seminole War.

"Men should either be treated generously or destroyed, because they take revenge for slight injuries - for heavy ones they cannot." - Niccolò Machiavelli

http://www.rawa.org/self_immolation/violence2.htm

Quote:October 22, 2004: Zarah, 19-years-old, shows scars that she suffered when she set fire to herself at the climax of an argument with her husband only three months into their marriage in Herat, Afghanistan. She said her husband was beating her for disobedience and she wanted to prove to him that she did not want to live with him. Zarah is now divorced and lives with her mother.
The problems facing women in Afghanistan are complex and are closely linked to their subordinate position in the Afghan society where conservative Islamic laws and traditions dictate what a woman is allowed to do in a male dominated world. Forced marriages, domestic violence, poverty and lack of access to education are several reasons for suicide.
