If he didn't, he would be able to be sued, as lupe will be making money from the record through individual sales and as it will be on his new album. Neither of which are free. Miller released the song on a free mixtape. Completely different. Every rapper has rapped on someone else's beats at some point in their career. Shit, Joell ortiz released a mixtape covering about 50 songs a few years back, should he also be sued for that?
Who cares whether he contacted him as well? Do you expect every unknown internet rapper to contact some artist before rhyming over a beat?

because i don't care at all about the legalities. lupe disrespected a legend accidentally by using an old instro, it's a good precedent.

there's nothing wrong with rapping over a beat. i've done it myself. where i draw the line is when you don't respect the original artist's wishes or you don't give them credit. i don't feel like mac miller gave credit to finesse to his listeners, nor did it look like he respected lord finesse's wishes in the original story. with mac miller's new tweets, i don't know. if his story is true then i'm probably going to be on his side.

i don't know what you are talking about in that last point, i never said you had to contact them before you sample. although lupe would be an exception with his fame and all..

How quickly does your opinion change? When the Lupe song was first released you were so butthurt when I said that Lupe should be rhmying over original beats, now your saying he has disrespected a legend?
Lupe didn't do anything wrong their either, he contacted Pete Rock about rhyming over the beat, and Pete Rock was happy for him to.

Now back to Mac Miller, where did Miller not respect Finesses' wishes or give him credit? Please point this out to me? I don't see anywhere that Miller took credit for Finesses work. Do you expect every rapper to say on a song when rhyming over other peoples beats "This is a song originally made by X rapper, and prodcued by Y Rapper?" Do you do this when you rhyme over other people's beats?

Mac Miller isn't wrong. If he is, then these guys should be sued

lol. quit putting words in my mouth.

i still disagree that using that beat was a bad idea musically. that never changed. but once pete rock went to twitter, i realized that the way lupe went about making the beat was really irresponsible and i side with pete rock there. pete rock thought he'd be involved in making the beat when he said yes but he never got a phone call back. its just a miscommunication, but still very bad on lupe for letting pete rock find out about the song when it dropped.

mac miller has an incredibly wide fanbase of 90's kids who have no idea who lord finesse is. with all the fame surrounding that song, i really think mac miller should have given a shoutout to one of his biggest influences and the man who made his track possible. still, thats small and able to be overlooked. where i really draw the line is the fact that lord finesse supposedly contacted datpiff, rostrum records, and mac miller and got no reply. but with the new tweets, that story seems questionable.

we just have to wait for more information i guess.

they shouldn't be. unless the original artists had a problem with how their music was being used, and asked the above artists to stop using their music, and they didn't listen.

I think Blockhead (producer) said it the best on Twitter:

rappers suing rappers for sampling sampled samples? Sounds awesome.
