Immortal Technique to do Benefit Show in Phoenix, AZ

On Friday, November 18, 2011, hip-hop artist Immortal Technique has announced that he will speak and perform at a PUENTE community benefit show in Phoenix, AZ. For those who may not be aware, PUENTE is a grassroots organization in Arizona that has a long history of fighting immigrant attacks. From the time Sheriff Joe Arpaio got his 287(g) agreement in Maricopa County, immigrants have been targeted strictly based on their ethnicity, cited for the most petty of allegations to blatant aggressive targeting of Latino communities. Sheriff Arpaio has chosen to be portrayed as the “Hate Sheriff”, a spectacle performance motivated by the Sheriff’s desperate need to divert attention away from his deplorable law enforcement record (see Pulitzer Prize-winning series Reasonable Doubt), his desire for Federal immigration enforcement and detention money (which he is under investigation for abusing), as well as his complicity with the private prison lobby. Arpaio even mocks at our basic sensibilities by selling prison underwear and hand cuffs, which he paints pink to mock inmates, in a souvenir shop owned by his wife.

Sheriff Arpaio (or Evil Arpaio, as we like to call him) has raised the bar for what immigration enforcement should be. By stoking the fire of hatred and aligning himself with known racists, as well as his extreme strategies for targeting Latino communities, Sheriff Arpaio has not only normalized local law enforcement of immigration laws, but he has made abuse of that enforcement popular among the many White voters in Arizona. The Sheriff’s machismo and bravado has led him to investigate those who oppose his strategies, and ridicule other agencies that do not emulate him. The result: Arizona has become a state where local law enforcement agencies compete against each other to see who can out-deport the most numbers of innocent immigrants.

There is no better time, or more perfect setting, for the powerful voice and uplifting message of Immortal Technique. We applaud this artist’s commitment to the cause, his desire to speak and perform in the heart of the community, and most of all, for Immortal Technique’s active leadership in The Sound Strike’s international boycott of Arizona. The boycott strategy has been the most effective and successful effort against the winds of hatred blowing through the State of Arizona.
