HP camera 'can't see' black faces

A YouTube video suggesting that face recognition cameras installed in HP laptops cannot detect black faces has had over one million views.

The short movie, uploaded earlier this month, features "Black Desi" and his colleague "White Wanda".

When Wanda, a white woman, is in front of the screen, the camera zooms to her face and moves as she moves.

But when Desi, a black man, does the same, the camera does not respond by tracking him.

The clip is light-hearted in tone but is titled "HP computers are racist".

"HP has been informed of a potential issue with the facial-tracking software included on some of its systems, which appears to occur when insufficient foreground lighting is available," an HP spokesman told BBC News.

"We take this seriously and are looking into it with our partners."

HEY! I have a HP notebook! It is how i am chating to all of you right now! I am so offended!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA just kiddin. but i do have an hp notebook which i am presently using.

hmmm apparently they did not use black subjects when the tested the face tracking software... hahahaha that is hilarious... that is quite a screw up. luckily if i use my hp web cam it will track my face so i don't really give a damn... no offense to those that it won't Big Grin

yea it is a bit disturbing, but probably what happened is when they made that interface they didn't test it on darker subjects... i am not sure exactly how that technology works but i can see how the color of someone could have an effect... they should probably re-adjust it so it is compatible with darker faces.... god i feel horrible just saying that...

The lighting in that place isn't the best, maybe HP didn't take into consideration that light sensitivity can disturb the motion detection when contrasting colours, in this case black and white are demonstrated.
