just compare the punic wars to the war on terror. mythology's influence on it, "Carthage delendum est", the Roman anger that Hannibal reached Rome, etc

gas, Rome collapsed because it was a society based of perpetual expansion, for which it reached its limit. Once expansion stopped, its army turned from being a source of income to a drain on resources
