Wouldn't it be great if your laundry emailed you when it had finished? You got a tweet every time the room got too cold, or your basement sent you a text if it began to flood?

While watching that Kevin Slavin Ted Talk I could only think of the stock market crash in the movie idiocracy. That guy made the terraforming sound like a good thing, when really it's all idiotic.

Cant get these videos at the moment Tex, will catch them later - but you're missing the plot line friend if you think
(judging by your comments on the religion/politics thread) that technology isn't ruled by politics. Technology is the algorithm built in.
http://somaweb.org/ I'll watch these videos and come back to them later.
The 'algorithm' is a set of instructions defined by a programmer with an agenda. Hence the control of hired technocrats.

Facebook Likes Displayed on Brazilian Fashion Retailer’s Racks...

Here’s how it works: Select articles of clothing are listed on their Facebook page, which people can choose to “like” if they decide this is something they would spend money on. These likes are then collected, processed, and sent to a digital counter on the item’s hanger in-store, allowing customers to see what everyone else thinks of the clothing in question. Of course, why anyone would listen to what the social networking site’s general population thinks about such things is beyond me. If you base all of your retail purchases on Facebook popularity, chances are you’re probably wearing something that will get you lots of unwanted attention at Wal-Mart. more

RE: Algorithms That Govern Our Lives
I remember reading a few years back that some U. S government institutions use algorithms to shape policy and to predict the future. Being too dependent on such probabilities does have its big cons, but imagine when it become more precise and consistent. For me, predicting human behavior will grab much of my interest if such goal is met.

Technology can only be its most effecient and useful when political structures and control are removed.
